   My name is David Bolger. I am artistic director of CoisCéim Dance Theatre. At present I am working with my mother, Madge, who is not a professional dancer. I am 43 years old, and Madge is 76 years old.
   
   Recently as part of our investigation for 'Swimming With My Mother', Madge and myself were both interviewed, which will form part of the material we will use in the work.
   Madge was asked the question,
   
   What is it like to be dancing with David ?
   
   Madge:
   It's very interesting to be doing something completely different, than I normally do. I normally watch David dancing, and now I am going to be dancing with him. So that's very exciting.
   
   Q: Does it bring back memories of dancing with David's father?
   
   Well, maybe little bits of it, a lot of it is completely different to what we used to do. I mean we mainly danced Foxtrot, Tangos, Slow waltzes, Rumba's, Sambas, Quick step, so it is a bit different to what we used to do! It's very modern compared to what we used to do. It's nice to be learning something new.
   What's also very interesting is that you can do so much more now when you are older. A lot of older people years ago did nothing, really. And now we are getting involved in a lot of things. I think it is brilliant. You have young people who take an interest in old people, and older people realise
   "I have more talent, than just sitting at home watching telly or whatever they do normally "
   
   Q: Has it been tough Madge?
   
   (Long Pause)...well lets put it this way, you have to be dedicated doing what you're...in fact, I wake up in the middle of the night, thinking about this turn, and that turn, and am I going to do it the right way, or the wrong way. So maybe when all this is over I will get a good nights sleep.
   
   In Madge's answers many subject arise.
   The sense of her learning something new.
   Her worry of getting it right or wrong.
   Her sense of being worth something through her talent.
   
   It made me question myself.
   I feel I have so much to learn from her.
   I could not forgive myself that I had made Madge feel worried about getting it right.
   After all, what is right and wrong in this dialogue between us?
   I do not have all the answers ,nor do I want to make all the statements.
   
   The following day I started our work in the studio with a different motivation.
   I wanted Madge to make the decisions.
   I quickly look up all the dances Madge had mentioned in her list of dances and brushed up on my Foxtrot, Tango , etc.
   I wanted to make her feel more at home with the dance.
   We started with a Rumba.
   Madge did not remember any of the dances. She said to me. "I haven't danced any of those in so long. I have forgotten all the steps"
   Memory.
   Remembering the steps, forgetting the steps.
   We then continued on for a while.
   The steps came back slowly over the course of the session.
   I felt better. I know that Madge felt better.
   
   I have learnt something new.
   Slow down.
   Listen to the dialogue, stop worrying about the work.
   Chat together, make Madge feel at home with the duet.
   Take her lead, and find the true meaning of what's being said on the dance floor!
   
   The process continues, and I look forward to the many lessons I can learn while dancing with Madge.
   What is so exciting for me is that, contemporary dance is allowed to investigate and experiment with many bodies and there is an openness to form, shape, content and truth.

   David,
   I've said before how much I envy you your chance to dance with your Mum now that we've gotten to the stage of understanding how important all the possible dances are.(big, small, on roadsides, ballrooms or swimming pools).
   
   Having worked with some of the dancers from Ríonach's Macushla Dance group last year, I recognise the process you experienced with Madge. "Listen to the dialogue, stop worrying about the work" is a great piece of advice not only in this situation but with all the dancers we work with. Maybe in conventional dance training, we forget or overlook that even professional dancers are many different bodies, many different people so remembering to listen to them is important too.
   
   One thing I want to raise as a question is whether it's so bad for people to worry about turning the right way or the wrong way. Professional or not, I worry about going the right way in a dance and in life. So long as the worry isn't debilitating I think it suggests that we are stretching into new challenging territory and like your mum and the Macushla dancers, I hope I have the courage to do that as I get older too - even if it causes me a few sleepless nights.
