      As this is a new forum, I thought it would be nice if we all introduce ourselves. So come on, say hello and tell us a bit about yourself? This is a good place to Shamelessly self promote yourself or just shoot the breeze.

      This way we can leave the other threads for what they're intended... thats creative dialogue.

      So lets get the ball rolling... I'm Jade. You'll usually find me logged on, and in the background somewhere. I don't know too much about contemporary dance so won't be posting that much, nonetheless I'm really looking forward to the festival,and seeing loads of great shows. I do however know a bit about a dance of another kind... the coding dance, call me Nerd, Geek, Web Developer or just Jade.

      I'm going to be around alot checking that everything is working as it should, and people are getting around the site okay. If you have any problems at all here - I'm your first port of cal, feel free to click on my profile link (my name in the top of this box) and send me a mail.

      I really hope this online tool adds something valuable and fresh to the community, its nothing without you the posters. I gave the site life by creating it, but you give it breath to live by posting on it. Good Luck and enjoy

      Hi it's me DMulroon! How exciting to be the 2nd person ever to post on this site. Well, this is the start of a big virtual adventure - I'm on the edge of my seat to see how it goes... What? You want to know who I am, what I do, what I am doing here? (Alright Jade!) Well - I've been kicking around the world of Contemporary Dance for nearly two decades now - don't know if I should actually admit that. What first brought me into this beat was the "Strange and Beautiful"world of Pina Bausch. That's how my friend Peter Brook actor Bruce Myers described it when I first mentioned Cafe Muller to him at the Avignon Theatre Festival, after I glimpsed it on a video screen. Speaking of Pina Bausch, the day after tomorrow I'm giving a paper on Pina Bausch and the Emancipated Spectator in a conference at Trinity College (Is that the 'shameless self-promotion bit?). I believe Pina Bausch, who, sadly, passed away last summer, wanted her spectators to be emancipated. Free individuals with their own thoughts, feelings, ideas and sense of the world. Free of all dogma and being told what to think or how to behave by anybody, or any institution. It's our responsibility to think for ourselves, and to be ourselves. That's what Pina would believe - though she never said that in so many words, she just suggested it through the complex ambiguity of dance. So let's just say this forum is for the emancipated spectator, to chew the fat over the many bodies of contemporary dance, and whatever themes Dublin Dance Festival 2010 turns up for them. (How's that Jade? ;)

      Hi, I'm Simon Ellis ... a choreographer, dancer and film-maker based in London, and also in Melbourne. I'm curious to keep an eye on Creative Dialogue, and hopefully it'll get a bit of momentum/discussion going.

      Hi I'm Emma Meehan and I'm writing a PhD at Trinity College on the experimental dance practice of Joan Davis which is called "Maya Lila". Of course, the theme of "many bodies" is relevant to her work, as she includes dancers of different ages and movement backgrounds engaging in somatic-based movement. The somatic approach allows dancers to focus on their own internal impulses rather than on external appearance, with the result that many different bodies and movement styles are valued in the work. I look forward to seeing new work at the dance festival and chatting to people on the forum about the performances.

      Hi, I’m Mary Kate Connolly.
      I’m an (Irish!) freelance writer and movement practitioner, currently based in London. I lecture in dance, writing, and live art at the Laban conservatoire and I have a research post here too in the intrepid world of Dance Science!
      I’ve written a lot on Raimund Hoghe and so am very excited to see him perform in dear ole Dublin. I’m also thrilled to be feeding in a little to this virtual adventure - nice to inhabit the festival online as well as from our theatre seats!

      It's great that this forum allows those of us not in Dublin for the festival to participate.
      I'm Fearghus Ó Conchúir, an independent choreographer. You can read about my work on www.bodiesandbuildings.blogspot.com
      I'm in China at the moment, preparing for performances in Shanghai next month around the EXPO there. One of the performances is Dialogue, a collaboration between me and Chinese dance artist Xiao Ke. We think of it as a dance conversation between a tall Irish man and a shorter Chinese woman, focusing on how we negotiate these physical differences as a study for how we might negotiate other cultural differences. but this distinction between physical and cultural isn't so clear cut: the more we work together (and the first version of Dialogue premiered in Dancehouse in Dublin in 2008), the more we realise that we have very different ideologies of the body. We understand our bodies and their relationship to the environment very differently and that different understanding conditions our approach to the 'simply' physical.

      i'm a writer who fell fortunately into the dance world and have been moving with it ever since. i have a background in theatre, so i understand the mechanics of performance, but i have no grounding in the history of modern dance: i watch and enjoy, with a very naive way of seeing dance.
      i also can't help but think about dance as more than just what dancers do but as a particular state of excitement i perceive in any body or mass or system that is overflowing with movement, flexibility, grace:
      "dance is an anti-gravity machine sent back from the beginning end of time to show us the edges of things . the shadow thrown by reality onto the backdrop of what…?"

      Hello. I'm Sheila Creevey - dancer, researcher and all that comes with it... I look forward to reading and participating in these discussions, as I am unable to attend many of the performances in Dublin. It will be interesting to see 'the dance' articulated.

      I'm Rachel Wynne, I'm a choreographer from Dublin currently living and making work in New York City. I have a dance company called expandance with members who live in Dublin, Wicklow, the Bronx and Brooklyn. We've made work where the same piece was performed in Dublin and New York simultaneously, connected via a phone line (Trio with Invisible Third) and with Skype (Trio II). Last week I performed a new dance theatre piece called Tributaries in Manhattan. Tributaries is accompanied by a sound scape of company members and supporters voices in Ireland and the United States, from interviews conducted throughout the rehearsal process - yes, we at expandance love the Skype :) It's great to see this site up; as Tributaries taught me, talking and listening about your work, other's work, and contemporary dance in general is so fascinating and so important.

      It's great to be connecting with you all. I'm Aoife McGrath - a dancer, choreographer, director and dance writer. I'm currently studying for a PhD (researching dance theatre in Ireland) at Trinity College Dublin where I've also lectured in performing, devising and contemporary Irish theatre. I'm reviewing the festival for Dance Europe and am really looking forward to taking part in these virtual exchanges.

      My name is Antje Schneider, I'm a dancer, choreographer and currently also researching for a PhD about the experience of body-mind awareness in contemporary dance practice.
      I have a fascination for movement, be it in dance, theatre, performance art..

      Hello there,

      I am Angie Smalis, originally from Athens Greece.
      I ve been living in Limerick for the last 7 years, dancing choreographic works of Daghdha Dance Company. For the last year and a half I ve gone freelancing, choreographing my own little works that I tour around the place. I am Artistic Director of Limerick Youth Theatre and a proud mom of three little boys.
      So yes, I have my hands full, before you say it.

      I ll be presenting a solo at Re-Presenting Ireland very soon. I hope i ll get to meet as many of you as possible in Dublin. The kids are staying back at home, I promise.

      Hi - John Scott here- choreographer/director of IMDT. I'm have two pieces in Dublin Dance Festival ACTIONS - a duet which is part of Re Presenting Ireland at Dance House and ADMIT ONE - a film produced by Camel Productions, directed by Steve Woods with my choreography, danced by Ashley Chen and Sophie Merry - the groovy dancing girl YouTube superstar. In my work i collaborate with many different ages, nationalities, bodies in many different degrees of political status. I work with professional dancers, refugees, asylum seekers, torture survivors and have choreographed a group of Palestinian dancers. I love a forum like this which gives visibility to people who are invisible in our respectable society.

      One of the first pieces I saw of John's had the wonderful Joanna Banks in it (who is also in Cindy Cummings' and Oonagh Kearney's DOTB film tonight) and I was delighted by the range of performers he was using. Since then I've seen that diversity increase to include high trained dancers and non professionals and I think John's work is inspirational in his creative embrace of that diversity.

      I'm a disabled performance artist and choreographer and am currently working as Scottish Dance Theatre's Dance Agent for Change where I am challenging ideas around what is a dancer and who can dance. I was one of the panellists involved in this fascinating conversation about the Many Bodies in Contemporary Dance and I'm excited that the conversation is being continued here.

      I found that the short time I spent at Dublin Dance Festival this week was incredibly thought provoking and has got me thinking about exciting future possibilities. So bring them on I say!!
