   I was lucky enough to see IMDT collaborator Charles Atlas' film/tribute "With Merce" earlier on today.
   I was so impressed by the legendary Merce Cunningham's many bodily incarnations as depicted (or edited together) by Atlas in the movie - from young, lithe, streamlined, to happy dancing octagenarian in the 1999 "Just Dancing" (that was my favourite, loved that), to seeing the world through Merce's Camcorder when he was in a wheelchair towards the end. That included his finger mistakenly over the lens as he got used to the camera. Just great. Very IMDT, I'd say. Or am I just projecting that onto IMDT because I am seeing the world through the lens of "Many Bodies" these days? Whether or not, Merce Cunningham was a totally inspirational character. I want his attitude to life. I wonder is "Just Dancing" up on youtube? I'd love to see it again...

   I’d rather find out something than repeat what I know. I prefer adventure to something that’s fixed.
   
   In coming to a new piece, I still try to find ways to use chance. It is to try to open my eyes to something I don’t know about rather than me simply repeating something that I already have dealt with.

   Dance is an art in space and time. The object of the dancer is to obliterate that.
   
   Too much technique makes for a robot; too much improvisation makes for a sloppy body.
   
   There isn’t a story in the conventional sense. Each person could receive this in his or her own way, and not receive it in some way that I’ve decided for them ahead of time.
   
   Live and work in every direction, so that whichever way you face is front.
   
   You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that fleeting moment when you feel alive. It is not for unsteady souls.
   
   The only way to do it is to do it.
   
   Have friends both old and young.
   
   Love surprises.
   
   Laugh often.

   Merce has been an influence on my work for several years - since I saw his company in OCEAN in Belfast Festival in 1997. I met Merce and the dancers at that time and have continued a dialogue with the company. Several of his dancers: Cheryl Therrien, Ashley Chen, Derry Swan, Tom Caley, Matthew Mohr, have since worked with me. Now I'm collaborating with Charles Atlas - a long time collaborator. Merce was always charming and encouraging delighted with the connection with his dancers. I find their approach to movement and their honesty and rigor adds a huge strength to my work. they are incapable of making a false move - any position is a work of art. My company is a community of beautiful bodies of different ages and sizes and techniques but all united in living in the work together
